    John Leonard

    John Leonard

    BS, Exercise Science

    John attended Appalachian State University in Boone, NC from 2012 -2016 and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science. During his time at Appalachian, John was a part of the varsity track and field team competing in the shot put, discus, and hammer throw events. From this, he was able to train under multiple track coaches and strength and conditioning coaches that helped him develop a foundational knowledge of sports performance training. The combination
    of personal experience and education has allowed John to pursue his passion for health and fitness and his dream of sharing his knowledge with others.

    Since graduating from Appalachian State University John has worked as a personal trainer for two years, working primarily in a one-on-one training setting. This setting allowed John to work with clients of all ages and backgrounds, from young athletes looking to improve in their sport to older adults looking to retain strength for daily activities. John is currently pursuing a Masters degree in Exercise Science at the University of Kansas. After completing his Masters degree, John hopes to continue his education and by pursuing a Doctorate in Physical Therapy.

    Trevor Jones - Personal Trainer

    Trevor loves to train athletes of all ages. While growing up, Trevor loved all sports but played basketball and baseball through high school. Baseball earned Trevor a scholarship to the University of Central Missouri and was a 3yr starting centerfielder for the Mules. While at UCM Trevor received awards on the field such as 1 st team all MIAA,Daktronics 2 nd team all-region team, and NCBWA 2 nd team all-region team as an outfielder in 2014-2015 season. Trevor was an intern strength coach for UCM Strength & Conditioning Department and received his bachelor’s degree from UCM as well. He is also in the process of receiving his MS in Exercise Science from Concordia University Chicago. In his free-time he likes to fish, play video games, hang with friends and spend time with his German Shepherd, Chief. Trevor moved to Kansas City a year and a half ago from St. Louis, Mo and wants to continue to make an impact on as many lives as possible in as many ways as he can.

    Paul Sterrett - Personal Trainer

    Paul Sterrett has been a Strength and Conditioning coach for over 10 years working with athletes of all ages. He spent five seasons as a Performance Coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers coaching at the Single A, Double A, and Triple A levels. Along with his professional experience, Paul would spend his off season's home in Overland Park, KS working with local high school, college, and professional athletes. He has moved back home wit his wife Andrea to continue his passion in the strength and conditioning industry working with local athletes of all ages. Paul offers a very unique and diverse vantage point of working with professional athletes, college athletes, high school athletes in the school setting and athletes of all ages in the private sector. Paul earned a bachelors’ degree in Kinesiology from Kansas State University in 2004. He is extremely excited to join the team at Kansas City Speed and Sport.

    Alex Phillips - Personal Trainer

    Alex, a recent graduate from the University of Missouri, has been in love with sports since she was a little girl. Growing up, Alex played a variety of sports, including basketball, track, golf, and her personal favorite- volleyball. Throughout her athletic career, Alex quickly learned the value of strength and speed training and its effectiveness in improving sports performance. When heading off to college, Alex rediscovered her passion for exercise, coaching, and sports performance, and graduated with a Bachelor’s in Nutrition and Fitness.

    During her college years, Alex had the opportunity to intern with the Mizzou Sport Nutrition team and volunteered as a coach for the Mizzou Cross Country team. She spent her weekends competing on the Mizzou Club volleyball team and earned Midwest Plains All-Conference honors in 2016. Since completing her undergraduate degree, Alex has worked with a variety of clients and trained athletes of all ages at two separate facilities in Columbia. Alex is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and is now pursuing a Master’s degree in Kinesiology from A.T. Still University.

    During her free time, Alex stays active by getting a workout in at the gym, going for a run with her dog Bo, shooting baskets, and hunting. During the summer months, you are guaranteed to find Alex slalom skiing on Table Rock Lake with her family and friends, playing sand volleyball, or relaxing poolside reading a good book.

    Brad Cottam - Personal Trainer

    Brad Cottam

    Brad spent the past 15 years of his life performing and studying under some of the top strength and conditioning coaches in the United States. As a tight end on the University of Tennessee football team, Brad spent 5 years working with legendary Strength Coach Johnny Long. Growing up, he participated in a number of sports including baseball, basketball, football, and soccer. During his college career, Brad excelled both on the football field and in the classroom. A 3-year starter on the Volunteer football team, Brad was named to the All-SEC Academic Team on 3 occasions and served as a team captain. He also played in the SEC Championship game, the Outback Bowl, and the Senior Bowl.

    In the 2008 NFL draft, the Kansas City Chiefs drafted Brad in the 3rd round. During his professional career, he worked with 2012 NFL Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year Cedric Smith (now with the Houston Texans) and Mike Clark (now with the Chicago Bears). After suffering a career ending neck injury, Brad has continued to rehabilitate and work with elite strength and conditioning programs. He is now devoted to passing on the skills, techniques, and knowledge he has obtained to the youth of Kansas City. Brad has a Bachelor’s degree in business from UT. He is certified as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. In addition to being a co-owner of KC Speed and Sport Academy, Brad also works on individual performance training.

    Nate Bruns - Personal Trainer

    Nate has more than 10 years of training experience. He has a strong passion for helping others reach their performance, strength, physical fitness goals. This led him to further his knowledge in exercise and sports performance by obtaining his Master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of Kansas. Throughout his life, Nate has played a variety of sports, including baseball, basketball, soccer, swimming, tennis, and track. As a young athlete, it quickly became apparent to Nate that individuals and teams can set themselves apart from the pack through hard work, dedication, and a positive attitude. Nate expects all of his athletes to embrace the process of becoming the ultimate athlete.

    While working towards his undergraduate degree in Business Management & Leadership with an emphasis in Sports Management, Nate interned for the KU Athletic Department. In graduate school, his studies focused on how athletes and teams can improve performance through proper weight training, conditioning and nutrition. Nate has been a personal trainer since 2006 and is certified by the American College of Sports Medicine. In addition to being one of the owners of KC Speed and Sport Academy, Nate is the owner of Nate Bruns Fitness, LLC.

    Richard Davilla - Personal Trainer

    Richard is a native to the Overland Park area where he has spent majority of his 23 years around the Sport Performance world and eventually earning a scholarship to play football at The University of Central Missouri. UCM is also where Richard would earn 4 All Conference Academic Honors while expanding his knowledge in Exercise Science by receiving a degree in Kinesiology.

    Richards desire to become a performance coach started with his early experiences with Johnny Beck and other high level coaches throughout high school before deciding to further his studies in that field. He has experience working with various athletes from youth groups to collegiate athletes, including a number of sports such as volleyball, basketball, football, hockey, etc… Richard credits his knowledge and ability that he has learned along the way to the guidance he has received from his teachers and previous coaches in the weight room and on the field. Being an athlete himself, Richards’s goal in working with these athletes is to help them achieve the goals they have set for themselves and help produce respectful young men and women off the field.

    In the near future, Richard would like to continue his academic career either in the field of Physical Therapy or continue his growth in Sports Performance.

    Johnny Beck - Personal Trainer

    Johnny Beck

    Johnny is a sports performance coach and part owner of KC Speed and Sport LLC. He has been involved with sports performance training and youth coaching since 2006. Johnny attended the University of Kansas, on a football scholarship, and was a four-year letterman while earning All-Conference academic and athletic awards.

    After his playing days, Johnny interned at KU as an assistant to the Director of Football Operations and started coaching high school football in Kansas City. From 2006-2013, Johnny worked as a sports performance coach at the Center for Athletic Performance and 68’s Inside Sports, where he worked as an assistant to a former NFL strength and conditioning coach.

    In 2013, Johnny co-founded All In Sports and helped build it into one of the premiere sports performance training facilities in the region. His passion for each athlete’s success is displayed daily, by closely interacting with athletes of all ages and sports. Outside of the facility, Johnny enjoys playing golf, traveling, and hanging out with his wife Maggie and their daughter Ellie.

    Eric Engelken - Personal Trainer

    Eric Engelken

    Eric has been involved with many different sports in the collegiate setting ranging from football, track & field, soccer, baseball, softball, swimming, and basketball. His career with athletics started with playing four years of collegiate soccer at Graceland University from 2009-2013. After that he began doing personal training for a year and landed his first internship with Florida International University (FIU) as a strength and conditioning intern. After FIU he was accepted into the University of Kansas Masters Exercise Science Program where he is currently in his last semester. During that time he interned with Kansas Football strength and conditioning for a year and a half. After interning with Kansas Football, Eric joined Kansas Track and Field as a strength and conditioning intern and is still currently involved.

    Eric’s passion has been Strength and Conditioning since he finished his undergraduate degree and has grown to appreciate the importance of it towards an athlete’s performance. Eric has been lucky to have learned from great coaches in powerlifting to collegiate strength and conditioning. Outside of coaching Eric loves to train for powerlifting and has been pursuing it since finishing college. Eric’s main goal for athletes is that he wants to them to succeed at any of their endeavors in life.

    Jacob Behara - Personal Trainer

    Jacob comes to us from the University of Kansas where he is currently an assistant strength and conditioning coach for track and field. At KU, Jacob has had the incredible opportunity to work with athletes at the highest level such as an Olympic gold medalist, multiple Olympians, national champions, as well as Big 12 champions. Before moving to Lawrence, Jacob was a performance specialist for Michael Johnson Performance at Spire Institute. At MJP, he was in charge of programming and leading the sessions for 50+ high level high school and post high school basketball academy athletes as well as 20 regional track and field athletes. Prior to MJP, Jacob was the assistant strength and conditioning coach at Stetson University where he was primarily responsible for baseball, lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, and rowing.

    Born in Puerto Rico, raised in Iowa, Scott joins us from San Francisco as our Director of Sports Performance. He is a believer, follower, husband, father, coach, weightlifter, jiu jitsu player, skateboarder, and podcaster. He is passionate about connecting with people on a real level, giving service to his community, and all things strength. He believes the only path to success is through hard work, discipline and, putting in the time. Scott revels in conversation, learning about other’s experiences, points of view, and philosophies. He is an open book and loves to learn as well as teach. Ask him any question and he’ll give you the most honest answer possible.
